Greetings New Creature! I read Shank's books in reverse order, so I started with 'Elect in the Son'. :-) I personally thought 'Elect in the Son' was better than 'Life in the Son', though both were good. Concerning two plans, I would say that there is only one plan for both. I think that this was Paul's point in Rom. 9-11. What he argues though is that Israel is not just made up of those who are born Israelites, but is made up of all those who believe. Thus, Rom. 8:29, while referring to Israel, is redefined in Rom. 9-11 to include all who believe. Thus, Shank argues (and I agree) that election is corporate and conditional, rather than individual and unconditional. Well, I have to run! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim Thank you again for your reply. If I believe that election is conditional to "whosoever believeth" (which I do). Then would that not mean that election is also individual to all the "whosoevers?" I mentioned that I am presently engrossed in Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Bible. I am currently wading my way through Romans Chapter 8 of this commentary. As soon as I get to chapters 9-11 I will see if Adam Clarke sheds any light on the topic of "election" I guess I will also have to get a copy of "Elect in the Son" Grace Peace and Love New Creature |

Greetings New Creature! This is a long topic, but I'll give my short answer. If I say to those in my Sunday Morning congregation, "It is good to see those whom God loves gathered here this morning", am I then saying that only those gathered in that particular congregation are loved by God and no one else? Of course not, I am simply describing those to whom I am speaking. In the same way, there isn't any verse in Scripture which limits election to only certain individuals. Rather, those to whom Paul is writing (i.e. Christians) are described as elect and chosen by God. I take the position, as does Shank, that the spiritual Israel is elect in Christ and that individuals are only elect in Him. So, when someone responds in faith to the grace of God, they become one of the 'elect'. Check out the book when you get a chance and let me know what you think! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
