1 | Follow: Is Last Supper a Passover? | John 18:28 | wayhunter | 71627 | ||
Dear Emmaus, John 18:28 says that the Passover was going to be on that evening of the day Jesus was tried, sentenced, and crucified. Note that the Jews avoided entering the Praetorium lest they be defiled and not be able to celebrate the Passover. In fact Jesus was crucified on Preparation Day, the day the sacrificial lambs were killed for the Passover. Passover was on the evening of Preparation Day. Actually John did not say Jesus celebrated the Passover meal. John said it was a supper, and it was held on the evening just prior to the Passover evening. However, Matthew, Mark and Luke said it was the Passover. How can this be reconciled? Could it be that, because Jesus knew what going to happen that night, He celebrated "Passover" in advance? wayhunter, Could it be that, because Jesus knew what going to happen that night, He celebrated "Passover" in advance? Yes. It is also known that some Jewish groups such as the Essenes (of Dead Sea scroll fame) used a somewhat different calender than other Jews, which is a an interesting note. Here is another older article which touches on the question also; http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14341a.htm And finally, here is another article or trancript of a talk relative to the Lat Supper as a Passover celebration: http://www.ewtn.com/library/answers/4thCup.htm Emmaus |
