1 | Putting the Lord to the test. | Mark 16:18 | malley | 152523
I was told by person on a prank site that if one could not perform the tasks of Mark 16:18 (picking up serpents and drinking poison and recovering) then they were not a true Christian. This seems like putting the Lord to the test. The person who said this to me posts in a site that mocks Fundamental Christianity. He calls us Cultural Christians. Can anyone tell me what the term Cultural Christian really means or is that a prank term as well? I realize that there is alot of evil on the internet and that one must be very careful.
2 | Putting the Lord to the test. | Mark 16:18 | DocTrinsograce | 152524
Hi, Malley... By "cultural Christianity" he is talking about a system of beliefs that is embraced by the masses, but has no deeper value than that. Here's a few comments from Oswald Chambers that you might find interesting. (His table comparing Biblical and Cultural Christianity is very interesting.) http://www.crossroad.to/charts/cultural-Christianity.html In Him, Doc |

3 | Biblical, cultural or both? | Mark 16:18 | malley | 152554
Hi,Doc... Thank you for answering my question and for providing the excellent link! I hope you don't mind if I use this link in my MSN web space. http://spaces.msn.com/members/bjc10/ There is so much confusion out there regarding Christianity! I was riding along at being Fundamental in my beliefs till I came up against fierce opposition from friends and family. I am torn between pleasing those around me and following the biblical Word. For example: Luk 14:26 "If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. Luk 14:27 "Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. and: Luk 9:61 Another also said, "I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home." Luk 9:62 But Jesus said to him, "No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God." I know in my heart that it will take great sacrifice on my part. I am so weak and confused right now, but I belong to Jesus and He will never let me go. So, the question is whether to be Biblical or Cultural or a combination of both. I have heard it said that very few will enter the Kingdom of Heaven and I can see why when they must choose to give up their life for Jesus. Thanks again, Malley |

4 | Biblical, cultural or both? | Mark 16:18 | Searcher56 | 152556
Malley, God's day to you and may I add my welcome to the SBF, There is great danger when one reduces parts of (or all) the Bible to being cultural. This passage came to mind "But I want you to be free from concern. One who is unmarried is concerned about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord; but one who is married is concerned about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, his interests are divided" (1 Cor 7:32-34a). This is natural ... because if I don't seek the interest of my wife, home life is tough. Last night, I went to church (to please Him), but didn't stay for choir practice (to minister to her and our sick grandchild). It is priorities ... love God first (Matt 22:36-37) and it will mean others take second place, even if they are Christians. I think if we put family ahead of God, we violate the Scripture you cited. I hope I helped, Searcher |

5 | Biblical, cultural or both? | Mark 16:18 | malley | 152595
Thank you, Searcher! You did help me. Life in this world gets harder when you choose to live Gods' plan. I am always trying to please the people around me, even when it means going against the small voice in my heart, which I hope is Jesus. It is not going to be easy and I fear lonliness and rejection. I pray that my Heart will be open to Jesus and that I will let go of what stands in the way of my serving Him. In Jesus' name. Amen. Best wishes from Malley |
