1 | Teaching Messiahship on the cross | Matt 27:46 | srbaegon | 33840
Ed, To tie this note and another very recently you mention: "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" (Matthew 27:46) is a referral back to Psalm 22. Psalm 22 portrays the suffering Messiah the Jews refused to see. Jesus was once more in compassion (grace) giving one last teaching on who He was. He was saying, "guys can't you see this is exactly what the Psalmist and prophets have been talking about?" I have never heard this before--quoting Ps 22 to show who He was. Could you (or anyone) flesh out this idea a bit more? I have only heard teaching relating his becoming sin for us and the Father having to turn away. Steve |

2 | Teaching Messiahship on the cross | Matt 27:46 | EdB | 33871
Steve Psalms 22, 23 and 24 are a trilogy of the offices of Christ. Psalm 22 shows the Christ as the suffering Messiah. Psalm 23 as the good Shepherd that cares for His sheep. And Psalm 24 the all conquering King of Glory. David wrote Psalm 22 under the unction of the Holy spirit nearly 1000 years before showing the Messiah must suffer and die, that he would be reproached and reviled, That his spirit would be poured out. His bones disjointed (happened when they dropped the cross into the hole). His tongue wold cling to His jaws and his hands and feet would be pierced. His garments would be divided. He would surrounded by ‘Dogs’ gentiles. Think about it your a Jew you know the Psalms by heart. Your watching the crucifixion, your sure your did right. God is proud of how you defended the faith from this blasphemer. Suddenly this awful person, this heretic, this man that has dared to call Himself the Son of God who is now hanging on the cross has just called your attention to the Psalm that describes exactly what is taking place before your very eyes. How could this be? How could this Psalm describe exactly what is happening unless… Oh no! What have we done? How convicting it had to be! Surely many others also realized at that moment what had just happened, but it was to late, for Jesus has just breathed His last. It is over, it is finished. Only thing left is to call upon the mercies of God. Jesus being God would never question God nor would He ever wonder aloud or otherwise if God had forsaken him. He knew God and He were one. That if he would never leave us nor forsake us how much more the assurance that God would never leave Him or forsake Him. I think the whole idea of Him questioning God came about by people that didn’t make the connection to Psalm 22 and then using human reasoning made the rest of the story your familiar with up. EdB |
