1 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Jon 2:2 | stjohn | 211902
It is an interesting question isn't it. I must admit I had to do a bit of searching myself when it was pointed out to me. I'd always presumed that Jonah had not died, but his posable death in the belly of the great fish, does add to the miraculous nature of Jonah's' story, and parallels more closely what our Lord said about it being a sign, that pointed to His, 'death' and resurrection. 2 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Jon 2:2 | azurelaw | 211906
Dear John, Wow, yes, an intriguing and interesting question indeed! However, I tend to hold the position that Jonah did not die but at the blink of or to the point of death (v5). I see v7 was pretty clear in describing his state of emergency. Concerning the concept of shoel, could this be a metaphor Jonah used in his poem to indicate a total separation from God? By the way, with the idea that "sea" implies God's judgment (Rev 21:1, there is no longer any sea) according to the Jewish thinking, Jonah considered God's judgment and punishment on him made him foretaste the shadow of eternal death that scares him so much (remember that he asked for death again in 4:3). More insights would be appreciated and thanks for the good question. Shalom Azure |

3 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Jon 2:2 | Val | 211911
Azure, I agree with you. The verses say he sank to the bottom of the sea;"Into the heart of the seas, And the current engulfed me" It was a violent storm and the sailors were afraid they were going to die. That is why they cast Jonah into the sea. The fish the Lord prepared actually saved Jonah from drowning. It may have taken the whale the 3 days to take him back to land. I just love the way God uses animals, fish, and nature to accomplish his purposes. I can imagine Jonah saying after he got on land, Ok I don't want to go back in there again. He headed straight for Ninevah. Then he got depressed because the people repented.
4 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Jon 2:2 | Nevvvvine | 211932
Hi Val: Just for clarification, as soon as Jonah was cast into the sea, it was calmed. When Jonah got to Ninevah, the people had already repented, and he got ("MAD") not depressed. Jonah wanted God to destroy them, because of all he had gone through, he was sooooooo mad he sat down until God did distroy them, and ended up with sun stroke. In Gods Love Nevvvvine |

5 | Did Jonah die in the belly of the fish? | Jon 2:2 | stjohn | 211933
Dear nevvvvine, just for clarification, Jonah was not depressed as you say, but neither was he 'mad' Jonah 4:1 Jonah did not wait until God destroyed Nineveh, though their repentance was indeed transitory, he, (Jonah) would have had to wait some considerable time, most scholars believe it was at least an hundred years.. Perhaps read the story again, it's a short book. John |
