1 | How do we receive living water? | Is 41:17 | Ray | 125025 | ||
Which translation would you prefer? Isaiah 41:17, NASB, "The afflected and needy are seeking water, but there is none, And their tongue is parched with thirst; I the Lord, will answer them *Myself, As the God of Israel I will not forsake them." Isaiah 41:17, NKJ, "The poor and needy seek water, but there is none. Their tongues fail for thirst. I the Lord, will hear them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them." The * shows the difference in the verse in that there is that additional pronoun of "Myself". There is also the difference in the idea of "I, the Lord, will hear them" or "I the Lord will answer them..." I am interested in this verse as I compare it with John 4:10, "...and *He would have given you living water." And also John 7:38, "He who believes in *Me, as the Scripture said, "From his [His] innermost being shall flow rivers of living water." And Isaiah 41:18, "*I will open rivers on the bare heights, And springs in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, And the dry land fountains of water." What does Jesus tell the Samaratian women living water does? It gives eternal life!! John 4:14 Who is the way, the truth and the life? How do you get the the Father? What is the only way to Him according to scripture? John 14:6 What is the only way to recieve eternal life? Through Jesus Christ salvation comes. Through Jesus Christ we recieve eternal life. John 3:16 Jesus is telling the women - if you only knew who I was - you would be asking me! And I would give you living water. I would give you myself He says. He is saying I am all you need. I am everything you will ever need forever. John 14:7 :) |

Hi applefire251, Thank you for your answer which is basically a very good one. However, I will speak to you as one who capitalizes pronouns of Deity. We are in agreement that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is the only way [Way], just as He came as light and is the Light of the world. No one comes to the Father but through Him. You have said two things in your post that I would speak to. "Through Jesus Christ we receive eternal life". And "It gives eternal life." 1) Since Jesus is not an "it", I would think that we can agree that the living water in John 4 did not give eternal life. The living water here was for cleansing, spiritual life, and spiritual transformation. I think of the living water as the word(s) of God and even the holy spirit of God. Isaiah 12:2, "'Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; For the Lord God is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation'. 3 Therefore you will joyously draw water From the springs of salvation. 4 And in that day you will say, "Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name. Make known (His) deeds among the peoples; Make them remember that His name is exalted." 5 Praise the Lord in song, for He has done excellent things; Let this be known throughout the earth. 6 Cry aloud and shout for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, For great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel." 2) I believe that Jesus wants to give living water as a gift, and that He wants the Samaritan woman to know who it [He] is who is speaking to her. I would not capitalize "Living Water", and thus I regard it as spiritual water from the Giver of life, her Maker. 3) In regard to the Maker, I found a comparison of John 4:10 with Isaiah 54:5,6 to be interesting. The context of John 4 is that Jesus want her to know Him as her Maker, as her husband, if you will. Isaiah 54:5, "For your husband is your Maker, Whose name is the Lord of hosts, And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel, Who is called the (God) of all the earth. 6 For the Lord has called you, Like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, Even like a wife of one's youth when she is rejected," Says your God. The Lord is our (Redeemer). Isaiah 54:8. He is her (Prophet). John 4:19. Praise His name, the Holy One of Israel. From the heart, Ray |

Isaiah 41:17, The afflicted and needy are seeking water, but there is none, And their tongue is parched with thirst; I, the Lord, will answer them *Myself, As the God of Israel (I) will not forsake them." Will the Lord answer them "Himself" by the use of rivers, springs, pools, and fountains of water? From the heart, Ray |

I think I'm misunderstanding your question. However, think of the verse of scripture, only the Lord can provide water, unless he moves someone to bring a glass or jug of water to a needy person. But provide a body or volume of water, only he alone can. Spiritual--Christ the living water. The afflicted and needy seek water. See John 4:10 and John 7:38-39. The Lord bless you. |
