Dear Aaron, Yes, only one gives authority. He does not grant authority to mishandle the Word. He does not grant authority to say what He has not said. He does not grant authority to link five diseperate passages without any indication that they are talking about the same thing. He does not grant authority to set aside sound and rational thought. Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. (Jeremiah 14:14) "What God has disclosed of Himself in Scripture does not permit us to pick and choose. On the other hand, it mandates that we interpret what He has disclosed within the constraints that He has Himself imposed." --D. A. Carson In Him, Doc |

Dear Aaron, One can discuss the selection of Matthias in the light of the historical context and arrive at differing conclusions without challenging the doctrine of the authority of Scripture. However, the kyrigma as a whole is inerrant, by virtue of a specific work of the Holy Spirit. Consequently, when one of the New Testament writers interprets and Old Testament passage, we can have confidence that it is an accurate rending of the Spirit's meaning in the original passage. This is the principle of using Scripture to interpret Scripture. The authority granted the apostles has not been granted to anyone else. The canon is closed. We have the Holy Spirit to illumine the Word to us, but even He will never make a passage of Scripture mean something it never originally meant. That is be presuming on God Himself. In Him, Doc |

What is the light that you would like for others to see in you? Matthew 5:14-16 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. [15] Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. [16] Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. It's your personal profile; what is it that you have personally experienced in your spiritual walk? Have you come to the place yet where you can say “for certain’ that you have eternal life? What, of a spiritual nature, would you like to share with the other members of the forum? CDBJ |
