1 | Is "discernment" from God or study | Ps 119:1 | DocTrinsograce | 236174
Hi, Turk... Welcome to the forum! Think of the first nine verses of Proverbs as an introduction to the book as a whole. Proverbs generally are pithy maxims of truth; i.e., "sayings of understanding." The offering of discernment, in the context of proverbs, are granted to those who are willing to receive instruction, seek out knowledge, and place a premium on wisdom. In Him, Doc |

2 | Any suggestions for commentaries? | Ps 119:1 | Turk Fowler | 236194
Thank you, Doc. I am definitely looking for instruction, knowledge and place a premium on wisdom. That being said, what external commentaries or sources do you recommend to dig deeper into the verses. I'm trying to use the Talmud but it's not an easy source to understand. Thank you, Doc.
3 | Any suggestions for commentaries? | Ps 119:1 | DocTrinsograce | 236195
Hi, Turk... I wouldn't spend much time with the Talmud. The Scriptures are the Word of God, yet for us to rightly understand them, as you have noted in a previous post, we need the Holy Spirit. Consequently, we would want to receive instruction from those Christ has gifted to the church specifically for that purpose (Ephesians 4:8-16). Might I suggest a book for you that has been one of the most valuable for training in proper hermeneutics: "How to Read the Bible for All its Worth" by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stewart. http://www.amazon.com/How-Read-Bible-All-Worth/dp/0310246040 There is a chapter in that book that will help you select a commentary.
