Greetings Norrie! Excellent question: Where in the Bible does it say that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute? And the answer is: Nowhere!! :) The only "background" that we have about Mary Magdalene (based on the Bible) is that she was from Magdala and that Jesus had driven seven demons from her (Mark 16:9, Luke 8:2). Mary Magdalene should not be confused with the sinful woman of Luke 7, the sinful woman of John 8, or Mary of Bethany in John 11:1. There is absolutely no Scriptural support for this "tradition" that says that Mary Magdalene was an adulteress or prostitute. Blessings to you, Nolan |

Nolan and Norrie, the notion that Mary Magdalene was a loose woman was strongly suggested in the heretical musical, Jesus Christ, Superstar and may well have served to perpetuate the rumor. The idea is, as you say, not supported by Scripture. It is nothing short of an eternal tribute to this fine woman that it was she, along with the "other Mary" (the mother of James the Less) to whom the Risen Christ first appeared. --Hank

Hank, I agree with you on this, and I'm glad that some of the tradional views taught in some churches today are being exposed if they are unscriptual. I have always had the highest respect for her, she had such a devotion and love for Jesus, that I think everyone could learn from. The fact that before we were saved by grace, we all had a little something going on in our lives that we needed cleansing from. I thank him for cleansing me. Opening my eyes to the truth, and giving me an unfailing desire to know him, and to continue seeking him and searching the scriptures for a better understanding. Thanks to all for your help in this area. Serenetime

Serentime, Greeting, and thank you for your kind response. Not unlike Mary Magdalene. we too, whatever we may have had going on in our lives, whether a "little" something or a "big" something, were in the same dire need of a Savior, weren't we? --Hank
