1 | Should I get baptized again? | Acts | savedsince1980 | 217856
This is what the bible says about baptism..." 35Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. 36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. (Acts 8:35-38.) Based on that I would say that a person should be baptized in water only after he or she has believed with all his/her heart that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Any prior baptism is of no consequence. |

Dear saved, I'm a credo-baptist as well, however, we must be quite careful about deriving doctrine from narrative. In Him, Doc |

Where should we derive doctrine then? From the opinions of man? Or from the plain and easy-to-understand word of God?

Dear saved, You asked, "Where should we derive doctrine then?" Doctrine is always best derived from didactic passages of Scriptures. We take all that Scripture has to say on any given topic in order to properly understand what we are to believe on that topic. Narrative is then examined in that light, not in the other way around. You asked, "From the opinions of man? Or from the plain and easy-to-understand word of God?" No, we do not take the "opinions of men" as authoritative in and of themselves. We are discussing the sound exegesis of the Bible. However, the opinions of men do carry authority insofar as they acknowledge and are derived from the authority of Scripture. A fundamental presupposition of this forum is the doctrine of sola Scriptura. (You agreed to it when you created your account.) For a very brief summary of proper Biblical exposition, wee thread #156918 and the various posts under that thread. In Him, Doc |

Hi, Saved... You are a very fast reader! To answer your latest question: Your conclusion, I believe, was correct. Your exegetical method was decidedly not. As in Mathematics, a forum given to Bible Study, cares about how you get where you are going as much as where you are going. Consequently, you will want to demonstrate a proper method of interpretation. That is an important part of teaching. In a day where the church is full of "children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming" it is important that we instruct them by example, as well as subject.
