1 | Two prophets? | Job | Jensen | 33232 | ||
Dear charis…Try again to understand the opposing position. Please. Linguistic Gymnastics are beneath you. You know the point Searcher is making. Why the Dance? Are you afraid of the weakness of the position you hold: That a prophet of God is still a prophet of God even if he declares “Thus saith the Lord…” and is shown to be wrong, incorrect, off the mark, unbiblical. The position is to me absurd. If you claim to speak for God, you better be right. What happens to the false prophet, the one who leads people astray? (Revelation) No other ministerial Gift makes that claim of speaking for God and you know it. Not a teacher, a pastor, an evangelical, or apostle. Even Paul took pains do write to Timothy that some of what he(Paul) was saying was of himself “…and not the Lord”. Would you consider a person who claimed the Gift of Evangelism and never, ever, led anyone in the direction to the Lord to be a true Evangelist (or are we not to judge?) And the Pastor who never, ever, led a church regardless of size but claimed to be a Pastor and that was proof enough that he had the Gift of Pastor? In my past life I would have said “Put up or shut up” but today I say TEST all things and RENEW your mind :-) Please do not seize only upon a single sentence found herein for a reply. Please speak to the spirit of the post if at all. What is disconcerting is that I once thought we were in agreement on this fine point of this debate. But if we can not agree on this single point of accuracy there is really little else to say. All doctrine is up for grabs. Christianity makes no stand. We can argue on endlessly on every point, regardless of Scriptural authority. We can make it up as we go along like a new age religion. We can even claim “secret” knowledge from now on. We impress not our Lord, and we play the part of the fool on the world stage. We search for God and find ourselves. Sad really. You know that I do not attack you on a personal basis. How could I? I have too much respect for you. But your position is…..well,……missing the mark. (And I think you know it) God Bless….Jensen |

Prophecy (prophesy) takes on two distinct meanings, yet they overlap with purpose: the first referring to the Old Testament prophets (prophecy): · The inspired declaration of divine will and purpose. · As the term is used in mystical theology, it applies both to the prophecies of canonical Scripture and to private prophecies. Understood in its strict sense, it means the foreknowledge of future events, though it may sometimes apply to past events of which there no memory, and to present hidden things which cannot be known by the natural light of reason. · Correct/guide the path of the church and her people The second definition (prophesy), which I will refer to as New Testament prophets: · (Prophesy) To give instruction in religious matters, preach · (Preach) To urge acceptance or abandonment of an idea or course of action. · (Edify) To instruct and improve especially in moral and religious knowledge · (Evangelize) To preach the gospel to and/or to convert to Christianity · Correct/guide the path of the church and her people With that, the Prophets of the Old Testament received Divine Inspiration (knowledge and understanding) directly from God, with the purpose of keeping the people and the church on the correct path toward God. Prophets of the New Testament, serve the same purpose. However the source of their knowledge is from the teachings of Jesus and, their understanding of the teachings of Jesus, is clarified and enhanced with guidance from both, the Holy Spirit and the Church. In Paul’s letters to the Corinthians and Timothy (1 Corinthians 14, 1 Timothy), he spoke of the gift of prophesy whose purpose was to build up the church. Expanding on this, the role of a prophet of the New Testament has multiple responsibilities, which include: evangelize, preach, edify, moralize, guide, instruct and educate other members of our community. This is conveyed or passed along by his words, as well as by his actions. The focal point of the efforts of a prophet, is to assist his fellow man towards a stronger, more positive, direct and personal relationship with God through Jesus. And, in order to aid in the first, help effect a fuller understanding as to the true meaning, purpose and ways of the church – as an instrument created by Jesus, with the purpose of guiding man to Jesus. In addition to basic knowledge, the following are pit-falls of which any prophet will always need to be conscious: · Speak and act with humility. Lack of humility leads to loss of focus, accuracy and assistance to the people being served – a prophet would then be speaking only for his own benefit. · Having the wisdom to give the correct and proper guidance to help enhance an individual’s devotion to God without misleading or creating debate or confusion. · Conveying the message in a manner which will be understood, without alienating · Continue to be conscious that his words and actions are viewed as representative of the Church, his ministry, and Christianity and that his words and actions can have a negative influence more powerful, than his other efforts can have as a positive influence. · To be conscious of the phase which each person is at, within their faith development · To constantly insure that his words are, in fact, the truth and not just an opinion, conjecture or rambling. · Not to lose sight of his role and responsibilities in proper service to God. Dear Brian, Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus! Well said, my friend, well said! (If I recall my Bible history, Israel was supposed to stone the false prophets, but killed all the true prophets for a fact!) In Christ Jesus, charis |

Dear charis...Thanks for the thought provoking debate. I see that we both have embraced the post of Brian. That is good. We agree after all when someone else puts the case. Maybe we were talking past one another?? For my part, I misunderstood the difference between NT and OT prophets. Two seperate, distinct roles and characteristics. They are so different perhaps they should have two different names. Kind of like the name "apostle" NOT TO START THAT DEBATE PLEASE:-o You do know that Ezra is talking about the OT prophets of which he believes he is similar to. Till we meet again, I remain your brother in Christ God Bless....Jensen |
