1 | Do you own a TNIV? | 2 Sam 21:19 | EdB | 68253 | ||
Justme Hi, how was your Thanksgiving? Let me interject my thoughts though I do not own a TNIV and probably never will. I have read just about all the info there is on it. From what I can tell it is a revamp of the NIV mainly done as a revenue generator. The biggest problem I have with it is the gender inclusiveness they wrote into it. Instead of using the word 'man' they use the 'human race', or 'their' is used instead of 'his'. While I know that considered politically correct to many I see it pandering to special interest groups. The biggest problem I have with the whole thing is about 4 or 5 years ago the publishers made a PROMISE not to publish this version after a public uproar. Then without warning they reneged on their promise and brought the version out. To me this shows a complete lack of character and integrity. For me the issue is big enough to boycott all Zondervan products an action I recommend to everyone. You posted another question on this subject and in it you asked is it better that the Living Bible. Let me say anything is better than the Living Bible. Now if you meant the New Living Translation that is another story. From what you said about a desire for readability The New Living Translation is what your looking for. It is simply brilliant in use of words to convey the ideas of the original writers. Also let me suggest if your looking for something that is nearly as literal as the NASB, has the poetic flow of KJV and readability of NIV then you might want to look at the New English Standard Version. EdB(:-) Warm regards to you. In The October 7, 2002 issue of CHRISTIANITY TODAY in an article titled " The TNIV Debate" is worth reading. Vern S. Poythress professor of New Testament interpretation at Westminster Seminary, Philadelphia, and Mark Strauss Professor of New Testament at Bethel Seminary, San Diego, explain their views on "Is this new translation faithful in its translation of gender?" I have read the article at least three times, and other material as well. I personally have the ultimate respect and trust in the NIV. I have made many contacts in Zondervan, and do not share your understanding of Zondervan, but I respect you for your honest expression concerns for the intregrity of Zondervan. May I suggest that you call Zondervan at 800-727-1309 and speak to customer service and express your concerns. Ask to speak with someone in the translator teams. They will be more than willing to listen, and explain the why and wherefor's of anything you may question. I think you will hasve a change of heart after you have done this. I might also suggest that you get a copy of the CHRISYIANITY TODAY for October. I believe Zondervan is one of a few that still guarantees leather Bibles unconditionally against manufacturing defects for a Lifetime. I recently had a first copydition of the NIV Study Bible from 1983 that the leafs were spliting. They replaced it and told me to keep the old one. That is genuine great service. I doubt I will get the TNIV as I am used to using the NASB with the NIV, and old habits are hard to brake. Besides I am to involved with my notes to start all over again. justme |
