AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 13:1 ¶ If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love [for others growing out of God's love for me], then I have become only a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal [just an annoying distraction]. |
Bible Question: Many people in my church speak in tongues- I have read about speaking in tongues, but don't really understand why I should want to and also why some feel that you have not been baptized in the Holy Spirit if you cannot speak in tongues. I have been told to pray for this gift, but it would be disingenuous to pray for something when I don't know why I want it. I have prayed for God to help me understand it better, but still I am confused. I wonder if I am not really reborn if I can't speak in tongues and am not sure I want to. |
Bible Answer: catmandel: Welcome to the Study Bible Forum. I like the way you are carefully thinking about the speaking in tongues. "I am still confused." The Lord is not the author of confusion, and that you can be very sure of. Those who are saying you need to speak in tongues to prove you are saved are very much mistaken, and it's not Biblical at all. Toungues are listed as a gift, and if it is active today, does asking for something to prove you are saved have any Scriptual basis? Demanding someone to prove their salvation by demonstration of any gift is totally twisting Scripture. I have never heard of anyone asking for the gift of helps, or giving, and these gifts are important for the body of Christ. I think if you got a statement of belief from this church you just might see some other things that make you confused as well. If you have surrendered to Jesus Christ then you are saved by faith. To add anything additional requirements is wrong. You will want to follow Christ in baptism to show your obedience and desire to follow Jesus Christ as Lord of your life. Those people who say you must speak in tongues have been pressured into speaking jibberish just to prove they are saved, and that is a false teaching. Beware catmandel, this is very wrong.
