Bible Question: How can "an evil spirit from God" be when there is no evil in God? |
Bible Answer: But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the LORD troubled him. 1 Samuel 16:14 New King James Version "a distressing spirit". 'God, in His sovereignty, allowed an evil spirit to torment Saul (compare Judg. 9:23; 1 Kin. 22:19-23; Job 1:6-12) for His purpose of establishing the throne of David. This spirit [was] a messenger from Satan...This demon spirit attacked Saul from without, for there is no evidence that the demon indwelt Saul. ... 'There are several NT occasions where God turned people over to demons or Satan for judgment (see Acts 5:1-3; 1 Cor. 5:1-7; 1 Tim. 1:18-20).'
