NASB | 1 Samuel 18:10 ¶ Now it came about on the next day that an evil spirit from God came mightily upon Saul, and he raved in the midst of the house, while David was playing the harp with his hand, as usual; and a spear was in Saul's hand. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Samuel 18:10 ¶ Now it came about on the next day that an evil spirit from God came forcefully on Saul, and he raved [madly] inside his house, while David was playing the harp with his hand, as usual; and there was a spear in Saul's hand. |
Bible Question (short): Why did God send an evil spirit to Saul? |
Question (full): 1 Samuel 18:10: I know that God is good and only sends good things to his children, but why was an "evil spirit from God" sent upon Saul. From reading the previous chapters I know that God took the kingdom away from Saul but is there something in the translation that is misleading me about God sending an evil spirit. In studying the rest of the Bible I have come to understand that God chastises those He loves, and tests us to refine us etc., but never tempts us and to me an evil spirit would be a form of temptation. What am I missing in this passage? |
