Bible Question:
I've searched and found many comments and questions about the Evil Spirit sent to Saul in 1 Sam 16:14. There of course are lots of responses, but none seem to address the questions that I have below: 1. As new testament Christians do we have to worry about our sin causing God to send an Evil Spirit to us? 2. In the cases in scripture where God sent an evil spirit, do you think that the receiver of the spirit was accountable to God for the additional sins that the spirit caused them to commit? Thanks, Chad |
Bible Answer: Greetings Chad, 1 Samuel 16:14 "Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD terrorized him." [NASB] The evil spirit was used by God as the instrument of judgment on Saul, resulting in a mental disturbance bordering on madness. The inspired writer of 1 Samuel dramatically made the point that Saul's repeated disobedience led the Spirit to depart, to quit working in Saul's life. Where Saul would not let the Spirit work, God let an evil spirit take charge. God's leaders follow God, or they follow evil. David represented the contrast to Saul. The Spirit took charge of David's life from that day on. Saul had the political office and power, but David had the Spirit's call and power. Holding a position does not make a person a leader, but obeying God's Spirit does. Blessings to you, Makarios |
