Bible Question: God is a God of love, but is he also a God of hate? I ask this because of 1 Sam. 15:3. It says, " now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey." God's commandment to Saul to kill the infants and nursing children seems like a lack of love, but I have always been taught that God loves everyone(John 3:16). This seems very contradicting. Can someone please explain? |
Bible Answer: 5pointer, May I add to what EdB and Steve have provided but on a different level of interpretation from your primary question? The Early Church Fathers'in their commentaries on the conquests of the nations by Joshua and following into Judges and even Samuel saw this also at a level below the literal as a metaphor for the spiritual combat we all must engage in to root out and destroy sin in our lives. The sins of these pagan nations are representative of the sins Israel as a nation and every individual must fight against relying on the strength and grace of God in our lives to carry us through. But fight we must, with our conquering God leading and going before us, to utterly destroy sin in our lives lest it destroy us! Emmaus |
