NASB | 1 Samuel 10:5 "Afterward you will come to the hill of God where the Philistine garrison is; and it shall be as soon as you have come there to the city, that you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and a lyre before them, and they will be prophesying. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Samuel 10:5 "After that you will come to the hill of God where the garrison of the Philistines is; and when you come there to the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place [of worship] with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre before them, and they will be prophesying. |
Bible Question (short): How to understand "prophesy" in 1 Samuel |
Question (full): When I read the word "prophesying" in 1 Samuel 10, and also in Ch.19, I get the feeling it indicates something quite different from the usual meaning. One could easily replace it by "singing", for example, in a sentence like this: "But when they saw a group of prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing there as their leader," Does anyone know of some discussion on this, e.g. on the basis of the Hebrew word for "prophesy"? |
