Bible Question: I am trying to fully understand the law of "Kinship Redemption" as it relates to Ruth and Boaz. I know it had something to do w/ property rights that women didn't have so Boaz married her. I have no clue about how the other male relative who wanted the land but not the wife (Ruth) fits into the law. Can you help me or steer me in the right direction for a fuller understanding? |
Bible Answer: Scripture ... Lev 25:5-10, 23-34, 47-49; Num 35:19-21; Rut 2:20, 3:9,12; 4:1-4, 14; Jer 32:6-15 ... The kinsman redeemer is the closet relative who took action for a dead relative. It included: - Producing an heir (Lev 25:5-10) - Purchasing the land (Lev 25:23-34; Jer 32:6-15) - Pursuing to avenge a death (Num 35:19-21) Note in Jeremiah 32:6, it is a right and duty. Also, one could be redeemed from slavery (Lev 25:47-48). "Now Naomi had a kinsman of her husband, a man of great wealth, of the family of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz" (Ruth 2:1). "Then Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died; and she was left with her two sons. They took for themselves Moabite women as wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. And they lived there about ten years. Then both Mahlon and Chilion also died" (Ruth 1:3-5a). So Naomi, Orpah and Ruth needed needed a kinsman redeemer. Boaz gave a closer relative a chance to be the kinsman redeemer ... but he gave an excuse ... Then he said to the closest relative, "Naomi, who has come back from the land of Moab, has to sell the piece of land which belonged to our brother Elimelech. "So I thought to inform you, saying, 'Buy it before those who are sitting here, and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if not, tell me that I may know; for there is no one but you to redeem it, and I am after you.'" And he said, "I will redeem it." Then Boaz said, "On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also acquire Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the deceased, in order to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance." The closest relative said, "I cannot redeem it for myself, because I would jeopardize my own inheritance. Redeem it for yourself; you may have my right of redemption, for I cannot redeem it." (Ruth 4:3-6) |
