Subject: Luke 5:8 use of "O Lord" |
Bible Note: Hi, Tom... The use of the interjection of "O" before the respectful acknowledgement of authority of the term of address "Lord" renders that phrase with even greater solemnity and earnestness than it would do so than if the word "Lord" were used alone. Although an equivalent word like "o" may not be in the original text, it is certainly appropriate to convey the proper sense. I can't think of a superior way to do it in English. Of course, nowadays, the use of the word "o" is so rare -- and would be particularly uncommon for anyone who didn't spend much time reading poetry or classical literature -- that it might not be rightly understood. The translator's job is not an easy one. In Him, Doc |
