Subject: can a women be an overseer. |
Bible Note: Whynot:Why not is a very excellent question in and of itself! Welcome to the Study Bible Forum. This question has been asked in many ways, many times. I take a different position that most conservative Christians. I say yes, but for most women it is a up hill climb, and there are denominations that will not even consider a woman in this position. Southern Baptist, Conserative Baptist, and General Assoc. of Reg Baptist just to name a few. However there are many denominations who do support women in ministry; American Baptist, Cooperative Baptist, Cornerstone Churches Network (formerly ABE) just to name a few. The Seminary I attended, Central Baptist Theological Seminary of Kansas City, KS not only supports women in ministry but the Rev. Dr. Molly Marshal is President of the Seminary. Women have served as Pastors in the United States from about 1820 or so. There are many books on the history of women in ministry. For a good reference please read: Beyond the Curse/Women Called to Ministry by Aida Besancon Spencer/Thomas Nelson Publishers; Women Pastors by John Eldred/Judson Press; blessed Is She by David Albert Farmer and Edwina hunter/ Harper Row Publishers. The bigger question are you sure that you or the woman (or man) is really called into ministry? The proof of God's call is when the Chruch calls you to ministry. I respect those who will disagre with me, but I am unwilling to argue the point. This is a subject that is widely debated and in this forum I am perhaps one of a very few that will openly say I support women in ministry. Blessings and may God lead you. justme |
