Bible Question: Is there any writings outside of the Scriptures that shed any light on what happened to Dinah, (Genesis 30:21 and Genesis 34) the daughter that Jacob had who was the central figure in the destruction of Shechem? |
Bible Answer: We don't know scripture does not reveal what happened to her and as far as I know there is nothing outside of scripture that tells us either. I did find this in Unger's New Bible Dictionary. DI´NAH (di3´na; “justice”). The daughter of Jacob by Leah (Genesis 30:21) and full sister of Simeon and Levi. While Jacob dwelt in Shechem, Dinah was seduced by Shechem, the son of Hamor, the prince of the country (Genesis 34). She was probably thirteen to fifteen years of age, the ordinary period of marriage in the East. Shechem proposed to make the usual reparation by paying a sum to the father and marrying her (Deut. 22:28-29), but Jacob declined to negotiate until he had made known the facts to his sons and conferred with them. Hamor proposed a fusion of the two peoples by the establishment of intermarriage and commerce. The sons, bent upon revenge, demanded, as a condition of the proposed union, the circumcision of the Shechemites. They assented, and on the third day, when the men were disabled, Simeon and Levi slew them all and took away their sister. Dinah probably continued unmarried and went with her father into Egypt (Genesis 46:15), about 1950 B.C. EdB |
