Bible Question:
Where in Gods word does it show that a priest/pastor is to over see the exchanging of vows to become married? My understanding is that marriage is a covenant between God,man, and a woman. In the book of Liviticus,it lists the duties of the priests,no where do i find that overseeing a marriage is one of there duties.I feel that if this was important to God that a priest was needed for a man and a woman to be married he surly would of wrote this in his word for us to obey and follow.I feel that when a man takes a woman to be his wife that he has at that point become married to this woman because he has made covenant with her and God that this is his choice and from that moment they are husband and wife in Gods eyes. |
Bible Answer: tnk In this country there are basically two groups of people that can preside over a wedding, Government officials (various offices which vary by state) and ministers. When we marry we are really making a covenant. That covenant is between you, your spouse. In a Christian wedding it is made before God and man. Since the concept of marriage was instituted by God I view it as religious experience rather than merely a civil ceremony. A pastor is called a shepherd and is charged with the care and feeding as well as the protection of the sheep to such a degree he should be integral in the live of each Christian in his care. If he is then who better to preside over the wedding? I’m of the belief the pastor needs to be fully involved in the religious walk of everyone he marries. There are many today that will marry anyone but to me that is a sham. They serve as little more than a justice of the peace and reduce the wedding to a civil event. EdB |
