Bible Question: Were there christians before Jesus? How were people saved before Jesus died for our sins? |
Bible Answer: Though some will surely profess otherwise, the truth of the matter is that there were NO Christians before Jesus. The word "khris-tee-an-os'", or as translated from the Greek, “Christian,” means follower of Christ. Before Christ, there were no "followers of Christ." According to the book of Acts, the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch. In scripture, this is the first mention of the pronoun, Christian. The only 3 occurrances are in Act_11:26; Act_26:28; and 1Pe_4:16; As to how people were saved prior to Jesus' sacrifice; I have done no in depth study on the matter, but from what I have read in scripture, it boiled down to living right, sacrificing and obeying the word of God. Isn't that what it is all about in the first place, obeying the word? Jesus was and is the word. GB |
