Bible Question: i was told that there is no purgatory. is that true. if not where in the bible can i find purgatory mentioned. as always, thank you |
Bible Answer: That is correct, Mike, there is no purgatory. The idea is totally foreign to scripture and is based in part on the unscriptural idea that there are temporal punishments due for sins, even forgiven sins, which we must suffer in this life or in the life to come before we can enter heaven. Christ did all the suffering that will pay for our sins IN FULL (1 Pet. 3:18; Heb. 10:10-14; John 19:30). The idea that you can suffer to pay for your sins and thereby expiate them is totally unscriptural and takes away from Christ's all-sufficient sacrifice on our behalf. It also totally ignores Christ's righteousness which is imputed to the believer (Rom.4), as well as His present work of intercession on our behalf (1 John 2:1; Rom. 8:34). Phil |
