Bible Question: Emmaus...I do have a question for a Catholic...one I had forgotten until reading an answer to a different question. I don't know if you saw the Passion of Christ...but if you did, tell me about this...remember the scene where Jesus is carrying the cross and the woman is seen at home. She leaves her home and meets Jesus in the street with a cup of water. This just seemed too much detail to be just something thought up for the movie. I felt it may be a tradition. Do you know the story behind the story? My Catholic friend with the most knowledge of the church hasn't seen the movie. I'd like to know the story if you know it...assuming there is a story here! Thanks. |
Bible Answer: 6 days, Sorry to be so slow in responding. I did not see your question until I saw EdB resposne which was pretty accurate. Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerick, was an Augustian Nun, who had many visions of the life of Christ, which were recorded by Brentano in four volumes. A book on the Passion was also published from those volumes titled The Dorous Passion of Out Lord Jesus Christ. It is available in print from TAN books. It has been some time since I read the book, but I do recall the scene with "Veronica" and the scene with Mary wiping up the blood as coming from the book. Gibson used these details to fill out the Gospel accounts. They are not Scripture and not part of Sacred Tradition and Catholics are not bound to accept any private revelation. It is part of popular devotions and the popular tradition about "Veronica" is very ancient and predated Emmerich's visions by over 1,000 years. Sacred Tradition and popular traditions or customs are two very different things for Catholics. Check this link for the text. go to chapter 34 http://www.emmerich1.com/DOLOROUS_PASSION_OF_OUR_LORD_JESUS_CHRIST.htm Emmaus |
