Bible Question: Emmaus...I do have a question for a Catholic...one I had forgotten until reading an answer to a different question. I don't know if you saw the Passion of Christ...but if you did, tell me about this...remember the scene where Jesus is carrying the cross and the woman is seen at home. She leaves her home and meets Jesus in the street with a cup of water. This just seemed too much detail to be just something thought up for the movie. I felt it may be a tradition. Do you know the story behind the story? My Catholic friend with the most knowledge of the church hasn't seen the movie. I'd like to know the story if you know it...assuming there is a story here! Thanks. |
Bible Answer: As a Catholic, here's what I know about the woman with water: In the Stations of the Cross (the devotion depicting 14 significant events in the Passion of our Lord), station 6 is that of Veronica offering her veil to Jesus. It is an act of Christian kindness, to see past the accusations and beatings He has endured, and to reach out to clean His face of the blood, sweat, and dirt on it. Although it is not Scripture-based, it is a part of Catholic tradition since the fifteenth century. If you are interested in learning more, I would encourage you to attend a Stations of the Cross service. Being a part of the traditions of the Catholic Church may help you gain more insight into the film "The Passion." I know it helped my non-Catholic friends! Jess |
