Bible Question: Godman, were not all Jews of Jesus's time either Pharisee or Saducee? The Pharisees believed in resurection but the Saducees did not. I believe that Jesus was probably raised as a Pharisee. The wealthiest class was the Saducees. See EdB's answer to my question. Jesus mainly disagreed with the Pharisees interpretation of the law. |
Bible Answer: newoldstock Actually the common Jew of the time weren't real worried about the weightier(??) matters of religion however most could be considered holding a Pharisaical view . The division between the Pharisees and the Sadducees was not as cleanly cut as we think. Shortly before Jesus’ time a division arose among the Jewish scholars one leading teachers felt the scripture was to be taken more literally and another felt it was more an allegory and became known as Sadducees. The Sadducees felt where scripture was talking about resurrection and spiritual matters that since these could not be seen or proven it was really talking as an allegory. The Sadducees were more sense orientated, more intellectual and usually wealthier. Much like today the difference between the liberal Christian and the fundementalist. As these divisions grew they moved from the educational institutions of time into the societal/political arena. Again very similar to days environment with the liberal and conservatives or fundamentalist. However they had one thing in common both wanted power and to control the people, again very much like today. Like today most people didn’t think in religious terms but rather trying to get along one day at a time. Then Jesus came on the scene and turned everything upside down. The Sanhedrian saw it’s authority challenged and together the Pharisees and Sadducees joined forces to combat this their common foe. EdB |
