AMPLIFIED 2015 | Judges 6:37 behold, I will put a fleece of [freshly sheared] wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece, and it is dry on all the ground [around it], then I will know that You will rescue Israel through me, as You have said." |
Bible Question:
I hear some folks say "if it is a word from the Lord, it will be confirmed by another person" am I overlooking something? |
Bible Answer: Greetings OkJoeK, Perhaps your question lies more in the spirit of 2 Peter 1:10 "Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall." [ESV] Yes, there is another "type" of confirmation, and that is to be sure that you have the qualities spoken of in 2 Peter 1:3-9. If you are already supplementing your faith with virture (v. 5), and with virtue knowledge (v. 5), and with knowledge self-control (v. 6), and with self-control steadfastness (v. 6), and with steadfastness godliness (v. 6), and with godliness brotherly affection (v. 7), and with brotherly affection love (v.7). "For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." (v. 8). Therefore, if you are practicing these qualities in your own life, then you can rest assured that it is the Lord who is speaking to you, if what you have 'heard' is in accordance with His will. See also Proverbs 3:5-6 and James 1:5-8. If we ask for confirmation from the Lord on any particular thing, then we must ask in faith, and in faith alone. In Judges 6:37, Gideon was not here seeking to learn God's will, because that had already been clearly revealed to him (see Judges 6:14,16). Gideon put out the fleece for two reasons: 1) To strengthen the weakness of his own faith 2) To give him evidence that would convince the people that he really was God's instrument. However, I believe that Judges 6 should not be taken as the usual method for discovering God's will for our lives, since the Lord has stated that everything that we ask for, we will receive in prayer (Luke 11:9-13; Mark 9:23). Perhaps it is more of an issue of our faith? Blessings to you, Makarios |
