Bible Question: I WOULD LIKE TO FIND THE SCRIPTURAL PASSAGE THAT ALUDES TO THE APOSTLE PAUL BEING LED BY A ROMAN SOLDIER TO THE GUILLOTINE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT? WE ARE READING ABOUT THE SPIRITUAL TRANSFORMATION OF APOSTLE PAUL IN BIBLE STUDY IN THE BOOK OF ACTS, BUT SOMEONE SAID APOSTLE PAUL DIED A MARTYR, BY BEING BEHEADED AND I WANTED TO FIND THE SCRIPTURAL PASSAGE THAT SUBSTANTIATES THIS- CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT? |
Bible Answer: There is nothing in the Bible. What we do know is that the Apostle Paul was a Roman citizen (see Acts and his Epistles), and Roman citizens were executed by beheading (a sword would be used). Eusebius, in his "Ecclesiastical History" II, 22, tells that Paul was martyred in Rome under Nero. Clement of Rome, writing circa AD 97 or possibily AD 68 (opinions differ), in his Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter 5, states that Peter and Paul were both martyred in Rome. A footnote to this passage in "The Ante Nicene Fathers" edited by Cox, dates it to the last year of Nero. BTW, the guillotine, as such, wasn't invented until the French Revolution when Dr Joseph Guillotine, its inventor, proposed it as an equitable execution machine. |
