Bible Question: There are disagreements between the Gospels--they contridict each other. For example, the day of Jesus' rise. In Matthew 28:1, it says "at dawn" and who went on the third day was "Mary Magdalene and the other Mary". In Mark 16:1-2, it says "just after sunrise" and "Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome". Does this mean that they are not credible and they are not the truth? |
Bible Answer: Hi, Ripplin... The gospels are not intended to be historical records in the sense that we as moderns think of them. Of the four of them, only Luke attempts a chronological approach that we tend to prefer. Instead, think of the gospels as sermons. Each of the gospel writers had a specific audience and a particular objective or purpose in writing. Consequently, they present the teachings of Christ in a fashion suitable for that purpose. Credibility is not an issue. The New Testament has been thoroughly, scrutinized, studied, examined, dissected, and researched. There is almost two millenia of scholarship that accepts it as the authoritative Word of God. In Him, Doc |
