Bible Question: need a better understanding of Acts 9:5 and Acts 26:14 based on the King James Version of the Bible. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Msedna42, There are several suggestions with regards to the meaning of goads and pricks. You must have some idea as to the meaning because the word goad isn’t actually used in the KJV of the Bible, which is what you wanted. Acts 9:5 (KJV) And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. Acts 9:5 (NKJV) And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" Then the Lord said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads." The words, “It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks” (KJV), are not in the better and earlier Greek manuscripts. But this statement is found in Acts 26:14. (Bible Knowledge Commentary) Acts 26:14 (KJV) And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. Some believe that the statement, It is hard for you to kick against the goads, means Paul had guilt feelings and was violating his conscience in persecuting believers in Christ. However, Paul wrote later that in spite of his blaspheming, violence, and persecution of the church he was shown mercy because he was acting in ignorance and unbelief (1 Tim. 1:13). Kicking the goads evidently referred to the futility of his persecuting the church. (BKC) Falling down was a common response to such revelations in the Old Testament and Jewish tradition. The “heavenly voice” (which some segments of Judaism thought had replaced prophecy) was often thought to speak in Hebrew or Aramaic. “Kicking against the goads” was a Greek proverb about fighting a god, possibly originating with the classical Greek playwright Euripides. It is not cited in the other accounts of Paul’s conversion, but it is appropriate in an address to Agrippa, who had an ample Greek education. (Bible Background Commentary) I “personally” think that Paul was going against the convicting work of the Holy Spirit in his life and the Lord took drastic action with him. John 16:7-9 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. [8] And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: [9] Of sin, because they believe not on me; Have a great day, CDBJ |
