Bible Question: Where does the modern day notion of church membership come from? Where is the scriptural derivation of such a practice? We, who have accepted God's salvation through Christ Jesus are already a members of the body and joint heirs with Christ Jesus. So why is membership to a local "cell" stressed so? |
Bible Answer: I have read all of these posts and must stand by them all. The only thing I can think to add is "Hebrews 13:17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account..." I believe if you chose to fellowship with one perticular body of believers ( we all should, only in really allowing others to know us can we mature spiritually ) that we must and are commanded to submit to the leadership of that body. Now as far as membership classes and being an official member of that body doesn't really mean much, but if that is there practice, and the leadership asks you to than you should obey if you chose to continue attendance there. However it is your choice where you fellowship, and there are plenty of churches that do not require membership. |
