Bible Question:
When did the apostles really receive the Holy Spirit? In John 20:22 states "And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit."" But as we know, according to the book of Acts, Jesus commanded the apostles to stay in Jerusalem until they had received the Holy Spirit: Acts 2L 1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[1] as the Spirit enabled them. This question was posed by someone in a Bible Study that I facilitate, and I was unable to come up with an answer. |
Bible Answer: I would ask the person who originally posed the question: Where in Acts does it say Jesus commanded the apostles to stay in Jerusalem until they had RECEIVED the HOLY SPIRIT?" NASB Luke 24:49 "And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are CLOTHED WITH POWER from on high." (Emphasis added.) NASB Acts 1:8 "but you will RECEIVE POWER when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." (Emphasis added.) |
