Bible Question:
When did the apostles really receive the Holy Spirit? In John 20:22 states "And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit."" But as we know, according to the book of Acts, Jesus commanded the apostles to stay in Jerusalem until they had received the Holy Spirit: Acts 2L 1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[1] as the Spirit enabled them. This question was posed by someone in a Bible Study that I facilitate, and I was unable to come up with an answer. |
Bible Answer: They were filled with the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. To fully understand this, there has to first be a clear understanding of who Jesus is. Jesus is the Word of God in the flesh. John 1:1, 14 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." Jesus said in John 15:4, "Abide in Me and I in you." He's saying to all believers, "Abide in My Word and My Spirit will be in you. While in the flesh, He dwelt with them (Immanuel), but in Spirit, he dwells in them. He had to first ascend (1 Timothy 3:16). After that, He is manifested as the Holy Spirit. WalkingTalkingBible |
