The Greek word 'monogenes' does not mean 'created' or 'made'. It simply means 'unique'. It has reference to 'kind' or ranking in a relationship. Jesus is the 'only begotten' in the sense that He is the only instance of God becoming man. John 1:1 makes it clear that there never was a 'time' when Jesus did not exist.
