Bible Question: Previous posts on the subject of Bible translations seem to point to a censensus that a translation of the Scriptures carried out by a large group of qualiifed translators is preferable to the tranlsation of one person. The reasons for this preference are fairly obvious and have been stated before, so I won't attempt to recap them here. My question to you is this: If group translation is preferable to individual translation, why wouldn't annotations in a study Bible made by a group of Bible scholars be preferable to annotations made by an individual? Examples of study Bibles that represent joint effort by a group would include NASB (and NIV) Study Bibles, the King James Study Bible and the Believer's Study Bible. Individual effort would include Ryrie, MacArthur and Dake. What are your thoughts? --Hank |
Bible Answer: Hank:-) In all this translating that seems never ending into the English, the method and agenda a person or team translates is a very important fact to know. The NIV uses a functional equalivenant method. In fact all translators who are attempting to put Scripture into languages of people with unknown languages, use this method. There is an effort at least in English to use as close word for word as humanly possible. The NASB is one that comes to mind rather readly. That version is my favorite, especially the updated revision. I would add that it is important to know what the translators agenda is in making a new or improved translation. You and several others of us on the Forum had the sad experince of reviewing the TNIV. There is a clear and twisted agenda, by the translators in this case. The TNIV has a team effort, but they were all of the same twisted mind set. The NRSV is an example of the very same twisting of Scripture to achive an agenda. Any thoughts? Blesings Hank. justme |
