Bible Question: Isn't the jewish people still awaiting their messiah? What is it that prevents them from recognizing Jesus and the new testament? |
Bible Answer: Hiya Fcs, I did neglect to answer that part didn't I? I'm sorry. Yes, they are still waiting for Messiah. There have been men over the centuries, even before Jesus, that they thought might be the Messiah but it turned out they were not. (The Jews have a list of sorts of what the Messiah will be like and what he will do.) We have a Jewish believer here at SBF and he can probably answer more fully, maybe even more correctly. But for now, my understanding is that the Jews rejected Jesus around the time He began equating Himself with God. The Jews do not believe that Messiah is God or that he will be God. Their whole belief system is based on the Sh'ma, "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one God!" Deut. 6:4 As you read the gospels you will see that He has many Jewish followers that walk away when He begins saying things like "...If ye had known me, ye would have known my Father also: from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him." (Jn. 14:7) and "...I and the Father are one..." (Jn. 10:30)and "...before Abraham was, I Am..." (Jn. 8:58) The Jews just could/can not accept that Jesus was/is God. Hope this helps till you can get a more complete answer :o) Cheri |
