Bible Question: Is the Jewish bible (Torah) identical to the Christian bible (Pentateuch), word for word? If so, did it come from the same original, I assume, Hebrew manuscripts? Do the Jewish people recognize the rest of the OT? Is there something in the Jewish religion that causes them to not recognize Christ and the new testament? |
Bible Answer: Shalom Fcs, The Torah (or the Law) is actually the first 5 books of Moses, but many Jews will use the term Torah to include the entire OT. (They do not call it the OT, they often speak of the entire Scriptures as the TaNaKH) It contains the same books as the Christian Bibles except the order and designation of the books are a bit different. The Torah or the Law: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. The Prophets come after Deuteronomy and include Joshua, Judges, 1 Samuel thru 2 Kings and are called Early Prophets Then you have Isaiah thru Malachi called the Latter Prophets. Then you have what's called the Writings (that you read of Jesus speaking about): Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Daniel, and the Jewish Bible ends with 1 and 2 Chronicles. Once again, other than the order and the designation (like Daniel not being considered a prophet) the Jewish Holy Scriptures are the same as what we use. The wording would be very much like our Bibles, they too have more than one English "translation" but like our different translations it all boils down to the same word of God. Hope this helps Cheri |
