Bible Question: Where there is a referenc of the Angel of the LORD in the old testament, is that a reference to Jesus the Christ? If so, where in scripture do we get this notion: that an angel could refer to the Son of God who is much higher than an angel? |
Bible Answer: Hello Literal Listener, The short answer is yes, the Angel of the LORD is Jesus the Christ. The proof comes by examining the activities of this angel. Look at the following: Gen 16:10 -- The angel says that he will multiply Hagar's offspring. Only God himself has this ability. Gen 22:15-18 -- The angel says that he will multiply Abraham's offspring. Again, only God himself has this ability. Numbers 22:35,38 -- The angel tells Balaam to only speak what he tells him. Balaam then tells Balak that he can only say what God puts in his mouth. Balaam equates the angel and God. Judges 2:1 -- The angel claims to be the one who led Israel out of Egypt and claims to have made a covenant with Israel demanding obedience, yet these were the LORD's doing. These should be sufficient to show that the angel and the LORD are two different individuals. Yet they both must be God since the angel does those things only God could do. Since Jesus was/is the only member of the Godhead with a body, the conclusion is that the angel is Jesus in pre-incarnate form. Steve |
