Bible Answer: Sissy You may want to look up the meaning of the word vain. Most connect it with swearing, cussing or cursing but the meaning goes deeper than that. Any time we use God's name when we are not talking directly to Him or about Him we are using his name in vain. Many people have the habit of using God's name as an exclamation, as emphasis or just throw it in from time to time. I heard a man addressing a crowd of preachers and he kept using God’s name as an exclamation. He would say “God I was scared” or “God that looked good”. Everyone commented how wonderful this guy was nobody seemed to mind his whole talk was laced with using God’s name in vain. You will hear a lot of TV preachers using God’s name in vain. EdB |
