Bible Question: I heard there is disagreement over whether the greek word to describe Mary translates to mean "virgin" or maiden. What is the actual greek word to describe her and what is its meaning or meanings? |
Bible Answer: The most common controversy that I am aware of in this regard pertains to the following passage: Isaiah 7:14 - Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. There has been a great deal of argument over the Hebrew word translated virgin. Some scholars say the word should be translated "young woman", others say "virgin" is the correct translation. I would suggest, ever so humbly, that the average non-Bible scholar with enough sense to come in out of the rain can look at the context and settle the matter in their own mind. Choice 1) Isaiah 7:14 - ... the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a [young woman] shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel [God with us]. Choice 2) Isaiah 7:14 - ... the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a [virgin] shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel [God with us]. Which makes the most sense to you? Thanks, Listener |
