Bible Question: Why did Jesus say to the man in John 5:14 and the woman in John 8:11, "sin no more"? Would he instruct them or us to do something that is impossible? |
Bible Answer: In the Life Application Study Bible, New International Version, (NIV)Jesus declared to the woman, "Go now and leave your life of sin." Jesus didn't condem the woman accused of adultery, but neither did He ignore or condone her sin. He told her to leave her life of sin. Jesus stands ready to forgive any sin in your life, but confession to Him and repentance mean a change of heart. Therefore, with God's help, we can accept Christ's forgineness and stop our wrongdoing. You will note that He did not say "you must immediately cease and desist all sin henceforth,", because He knows that for all humans, this would not be possible. If you sin, ask His forgiveness and then make a continued effort not to duplicate that sin again...take each day as it comes and THINK before you DO for out of the mouth pours fourth the thoughts of the heart.
