Bible Note: It really is a definition of terms and I am glad that you noticed how terms have become interchangeable. It was not always this way. May I make an analogy (however imperfect)? Israel the land mass; like America the land mass Israel the nation; Like Abby Hoffmans "Woodstock Nation" - an idea, concept, or common belief systems. I have been "grafted" into the this nation of Israel. But I would never be considered an "Israeli" in the common use of the term. Hebrew; Like English to America, Spoken by most Americans but not always the first language. When someone from old Israel was out of the country, Greece or Rome for example, they were called Hebrews because of their language. Jew as a resident; Like a Floridian is to America; a specific part of the country. Remember that the kingdom was divided and part of it was called Judah and the other was called Israel. So you could be called a Jew if you lived in Judah but were from the tribe of Levite, for example. Jew as cosmopolitan; Like a "native-American" in America. Can live anywhere but may be known as "Indians" I am always careful to understand the context of these terms when speaking with other Christians. They have become so interchangeable that they have lost much of their original meaning. I do not know if the rest are impostors as your friend says. To be an impostor one must make a deception and mostly it is just a matter of term definition. I hope that my note does not muddle things further :) God Bless Jensen |
