NASB | Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the Book of Life; and the dead were judged according to what they had done as written in the books [that is, everything done while on earth]. [Jer 17:10; Rom 2:6] |
Bible Question: In Revelation 20:12 It says "the books were opened" and "the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books." Usually, I have heard the books interpreted as records of the deeds of the dead. Where did this interpretation come from? Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that these are the books of the Law which are publicly read to confront people with their sins as Ezra did in Nehemiah 8:1-9 and 9:3? Or as in modern courts where the laws are "on the books" and infractions of them are publicly judged? |
Bible Answer: Greetings, The books are the books of the deeds or works that unbelievers are relying on to gain the approbation or approval of God and they are the antithesis to what Jesus did on the cross for their sins. Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; There won’t be any sins mentioned at the white throne judgment, they were all paid for by Christ as the lame of God which “takes away” the sin of the world. 1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. The only sin that Jesus didn’t pay for is the sin of rejecting Jesus as the Messiah and this one sin will condemn one to an eternal separation from God in the lake of fire! On the other hand those that have placed the “totality of their faith” in the finished work of Christ have their names written in the book of life! Have a great day, CDBJ |
