AMPLIFIED 2015 | Revelation 2:20 'But I have this [charge] against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess [claiming to be inspired], and she teaches and misleads My bond-servants so that they commit [acts of sexual] immorality and eat food sacrificed to idols. Bible Question: Many charasmatic churches do take the revelation verse to refer to a spirit along the lines of the character of Jezebel in the OT. This spirit works from within the church to undermine the unity of God's people? What do u think? |
Bible Answer: Dear itsdeehere, Yes, I'm quite familiar with such teachings, having been saved in the Charismatic Church. Since the Scripture does not specifically state that it is a spirit, by what authority do we do so? Human beings are nasty enough (Matthew 15:18-19) even without demonic assistance. Scripture doesn't give them near the credit that this teaching of Charismatics and others do. (Making a passage say what we want it to say, instead of what it actually says, is called eisegesis. Such practices are not handling the Word skillfully or soundly.) In Christ's day the people thought that the greatest evils in the world were hunger, pestilence, and foreign occupation. Christ was crucified for teaching the greatest evil was from within the human heart. Today we say the greatest evils in the world are abortion, terrorism, and Godless humanism. We are offended, still, with Christ's teaching. Consequently, we invent things to blame, rather than falling on our knees and seeking the continuing ministrations of the Savior. I deem there is a spiritually unhealthy preoccupation with demonology and angelology these days. Furthermore, there is little "ology" behind them. They are particularly lacking any substantive teaching from the Word of God. In Him, Doc |
