Bible Question: In Revalations chapter 12, Please explain the term "woman" and explain all the symbols mentioned in that chapter. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Neal, Chapter 12 is a description of a war - first on earth and then in heaven then back on earth. The woman represents Israel. Being clothed with the sun speaks of the glory, dignity and exalted status of Israel. The picture of the moon under her feet possibly describes God's covenant relationship with Israel since new moons were associated with worship. The 12 stars represent the 12 tribes. The child of course is Christ. The crying out in pain portrays how Israel has agonized and suffered for centuries waiting for Jesus to come and destroy Satan. The red (represents bloodshed) dragon represents Satan. The mention of 10 and 7 refers to the 7 past worldly empires and the 10 future kingdoms Satan will rule until the 7th trumpet blows. The rod of iron in v. 5 represents the coronation as King over the nations of the world. Caught up to God refers to His assension which is proof of Satan's failure. The 1262 days equals 42 months or 1/2 of the tribulation. V. 14 talks of the woman being given 2 wings of a great eagle. These are not literal wings but instead a depiction of God's protection of Israel. In v. 16 it talks about a great army that will come against Israel like a flood but will be swallowed up in the earth, possible in the many earthquakes that occur during that period. Satan will turn his wrath against the rest of her offspring (the followers of Christ). Hope this helps. prayon |
