AMPLIFIED 2015 | Revelation 11:15 ¶ Then the seventh angel sounded [his trumpet]; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom (dominion, rule) of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever." Bible Question: Why is Revelations 11:17 translated with the plural form of "to be"? I can't find another Bible translation rendered that way, or rendered that way in any other verse with the phrase "who were and who are" instead of "who was and who is" |
Bible Answer: Hi joyfulmom, Welcome to the forum. I can't speak to the Greek and why it is translated that way (in the plural). However, in the context of Revelation 11:15 I see the plurality of the kingdom of the Lord and of His Christ. And yet the (o)Oneness of His reigning forever and ever. Also, in Revelation 11:17 the "One" is implied in the Greek and thus we see the option of NKJ, "The One who is and who was and who is to come" and the option of the NASB, 1997, "who are and who were." 1) I find it of interest also that the TR adds "and the (One) coming." In that regard, I look at the tense of Revelation 11:17. Revelation 11:17, NASB, 1977, "saying, "We give Thee thanks, O Lord God, the Almighty, who art and who wast, because Thou hast taken Thy great power and hast begun to reign. [Marginal note, [Lit. didst reign]." I think that the bottom line is that God who is Spirit is to reign, and He as the triune God is the One who was and who is and who is to come. And He has come in great power and has begun to reign. Thanks for your question, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts. From the heart, Ray |
