NASB | 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord does not delay [as though He were unable to act] and is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is [extraordinarily] patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. |
Bible Question: In 2 Peter 3, Peter talks about how the mockers mock, and "it escapes their notice that...". In verses 8 and 9 he switches from "they" to "he is patient toward you". Is this significant? How so? |
Bible Answer: Hi benjamite, The fact that should not escape anyone's notice is that God is coming. 2 Peter 3:3, "Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, "Where is the promise of (His) coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation." I have been led to Isaiah 5:19 as a reference by my Study Bible. Isaiah 5:18, "Woe to those who drag iniquity with the cords of falsehood, And sin as if with cart ropes; Who say, "Let (Him) make speed, let Him hasten His work, that we may see it; And let the purpose of the Holy One of Israel draw near And come to pass, that we may know it." Also, see Matthew 17:16, "And I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him." And Jesus answered and said, "O unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall (I) be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me. And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured at once." Or, John 14:8,9, "Phillip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us." Jesus said to him, "Have (I) been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Phillip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how do you say, "Show us the Father?"" Revelation 22:12, "Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the (First) and the Last, the Beginning and the End." Of course the parentheses are mine as is the capitalization in Revelation here. I hope this adds meaning for you. For God promised that He would come and He came to earth for a while, and He will come again to judge the whole world. Later, Ray |
