Bible Question:
I have heard the bible says that no individual should interpret the scriptures. And that it says that the Spirit is the only interpreter of the scriptures. Where are these lines? Does anyone have any opinions on them, is it refering to the spirit as an interpretor uncorrupted by society? Thanks, Slarty |
Bible Answer: Hi Slarty, I trust that you are enjoying the forum. May I speak to you as one who interprets the Scriptures through capitalization of pronouns of Deity. Because I count these pronouns and have interest in the difference between "spirit" and Spirit, your reference to "the spirit as an interpretor" caught my eye. 2 Peter 1:17-21 has several choices of interpretation. First I would have to choose between "excellent glory" or Excellent Glory, "the Majestic Glory" of NASB. Next I would have to choose between "My beloved Son" or My Son the Beloved. Thirdly, as a counter of pronouns, I would have to choose between "Morning Star" or morning star; Holy Spirit or "holy spirit"? This is my interest or obsession, but since this passage says that "no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation" there must be one correct interpretation. I believe that our translator/interpretors have much work yet to do. I note that srbaegon in your duplicate post mentioned Romans 8:6. Here we have a choice of being spiritually minded or setting our minds on the Spirit. Romans 8:6, NKJ, "For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." Romans 8:6, NASB, "For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace." Does this interest you at all? Do we receive a Spirit or a spirit of adoption as sons? Romans 8:15. From the heart, Ray |
